Elections in Israel: The Issue of Verifying Voting Records Affects All Voters
PRESS RELEASE
November 8, 2026 | Jerusalem, Israel
Following the elections to the 26th Knesset, a request was submitted to Israel's Central Elections Committee seeking clarification on whether citizens can verify their participation in voting using their identity card numbers. The question raised by a single voter potentially concerns all citizens who were eligible to vote in the October 27, 2026 elections.
On October 29, 2026, Israeli citizen Milana Gorenstein submitted a request to the Central Elections Committee asking how voters can check whether their participation in the elections was recorded under their personal identification number (Teudat Zehut).
The central issue is citizens' ability to access official information about their participation in elections. Every voter should be able to check, through a government register or personal online account, whether their participation in voting was recorded and, if so, where and when they voted.
The issue concerns a procedure affecting all 7,331,981 citizens eligible to vote in the October 27 elections. The verification would concern only the record of participation in voting, without revealing the contents of the ballot or compromising the secrecy of the vote.
If the absence of a clear verification mechanism is confirmed, it could raise questions about the effectiveness of legally established safeguards governing the use of voters' personal data.
Due to the lack of a response from the Central Elections Committee, the matter was also referred to the State Comptroller of Israel, the Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, and the State Control Committee. In addition, the Legal Department of the Office of the President of Israel was notified of the situation.
As of the publication date, the Central Elections Committee has not provided a substantive response to the original request, registered under No. 8629. The applicant intends to continue pursuing the legal avenues available to her until a reasoned response is received.
